Have We Gone Too Far?

“You wonder why they call you bitch I betcha.” – TUPAC

Once upon a time, all was well with the world and the term “bitch” was some ill-reputed curse at a woman’s integrity. Then, somewhere along the changing times, such a destructive label got lost in translation.

Maybe it was when Trina self-proclaimed herself as the “baddest bitch” or possibly when the first woman benevolently bestowed her bestie with the “bitch” crown. Is this previous curse now a gift of affection to throw among the women we love? Is it a word that proves empowerment of the boss and bad “bitches” of the world, or simply a concealed curse that entraps women into allowing and smiling at underlying belittling?

“I call my bestie my bitch out of love. I would never just call any woman that openly unless we were cool.”

“Yasssssss bitch! Go best friend. That’s my best friend!” say way too many women to count. Though a man, or a female enemy, may get “bitch slapped” for referring to a woman as a female dog, it has become perfectly fine for the best of friends to use it when referring to each other. But there is where the meaning becomes muddled. It’s a sin and a shame for the word to fall from the lips of one, but laughable when it comes from a different set of lips.

Then we have the infamous bitch preceded by “bad” and all is right with the word. A “bad bitch,” as urban dictionary so eloquently puts it, is “totally mentally gifted and usually also fine as hell.” Which means a “bad bitch” is now equivalent to a good woman. Right? Who would have ever guessed that such a bad word becomes good by simply adding that extra healthy dose of negativity? We jest, but just a little, which leads us to the idea of possible social entrapment with those five little letters.

If being referred to as a “bitch” is not only allowed, but at times encouraged, where does one draw the line when the word shines its disparaging light? Is it fair for women to demand respect among the masses and get angry when we are called out of our name, when we ourselves swath in the “bitch” title when beneficial? Could the overuse of such a derogatory term simply be a societal ploy to drive women back millions of years into the pre-feminism dark ages? Maybe we are getting a little too conspiracy-theory minded… but it’s something to think about.

All that being said, how do you stay regal in a world full of bitches? Carry yourself like a queen and demand nothing less than royal treatment.
