Growing up, it was not common in many families of my era to sit with our parents and watch the news. Now even in this era there’s a television or laptop in every room and everyone is doing his or her own thing. Teaching our kids about pertinent issues plaguing the headlines as well as exposing them to cultures other than our own is necessary. Yes, there are stimulants everywhere, but it is imperative that we teach them about what is going on in the world. May we suggest incorporating the nightly news into family time with your children? Shutting down those devices and having informative conversation especially during news time will greatly benefit them.
2018, is election year in the US, but also around the world people are exercising their rights to vote on different issues. Whether addressing state tax funding, or basic human rights, people are getting out there and making noise about a lot of things. Being citizens of the world, you should be interested in what’s going on with the world. Also, take an interest in other political processes because not everyone is governed under a democracy. Here are a few things you can do to get your child involved in the power of voting:
- Join committees in school where they can learn about the democratic process and how it affects them
- Encourage them to run for student office and talk about the issues that are most talked about among classmates.
- Watch the news, and learn about other countries and their concerns. You cannot have the attitude that it’s not happening to you so it’s not happening.
Marking an X on a paper is more than just that, it’s saying, “Here I am, here’s what I have to say and I COUNT”. Get registered, get voting, and make a change, you have a voice!
