With the crazy racial climate we are in today, we need to be reminded that being Black is just as synonymous with excellence as anything (or anyone) else. Excellence isn’t something we’re born with, but it’s certainly something that’s instilled in most of us at a very young age.
WHEN BLACK MEN AND WOMEN MARRY, IT IS THE ULTIMATE CHANCE TO SHOW JUST HOW EXCELLENT WE ARE AS A PEOPLE.
Here are some ways to use your union to promote Black excellence in our communities.
Immerse yourselves in Black culture…not just the slave history stuff either.
We’re all for a #staywoke movement, but slavery is a fraction of the contributions that Blacks have made since the beginning of time. Focus on the creativity and innovation that surrounds you. Read books by Black authors, become familiar with Black artists, and celebrate groundbreaking Black firsts by posting them on social media (as opposed to reposting fights that help tear us down).
Make education a standard in your family and encourage and support HBCUs.
In many other cultures, going to college is not an option, but expected. Why should it be any different with Black people? Keeping up with mainstream America takes more than hoop skills and lacing beats with dope lyrics. If you don’t have a degree, aim to get one from a historically Black college (HBCU); if you already have one, encourage your spouse to follow suit. Always be on the lookout for continuing education opportunities. HBCUs promote Black excellence all day, every day; start there.
Spend time with other Black couples
One way to strengthen your bond is to be with other like-minded individuals. Hanging out with single friends is fine, but you need to be with other Black couples who likely have the same responsibilities that you do. You will also see that you are not alone in your issues and can get feedback on how to handle them. On the flip side, this is a great way to celebrate and encourage Black love.
Take time with other kids
We all know children who could use a little more attention, love or motivation; they are the children who need you the most! Forge a relationship with a child in need and expose them to Black excellence that they may not see otherwise. Introduce them to Black history museums, art expos, and Black authors. They may not be your children, but it takes a village to raise a child. Be a positive role model and encourage your friends to do the same.
Support Black businesses
Duh! Keeping money in the Black community creates a stronger sense of pride and accomplishment. It also maintains jobs and enriches our neighborhoods. That’s Black excellence at its best.
Marriage is a great place to start if you are trying to affect change within the Black community. By committing to this change together, you are making your union and commitment to the cause that much stronger.
