In recent news, people are discussing why Juneteenth isn’t a national holiday just like the others. It is just as significant as Independence day and even more important than labor day. Think about it, slavery is the best example of a labor force in America. There are only 45 states that recognize the holiday. The fight to make it a National holiday has been going on since around 1980 when it became a state holiday in Texas. You would think that one of the most important days that changed the lives and future of every American would be celebrated.

The celebration of Juneteenth mainly focuses on education and self-improvement. Prayer services and guest speakers are a significant part of Juneteenth because Christianity is what many slaves converted. According to juneteenth.com, strawberry soda, the way you dressed and barbecuing are the most important elements of this celebration. Although in the beginning, many areas tried to block the celebrations, they continued to become bigger celebrations when emancipated slaves started to purchase land. They would have the day off to celebrate even though the party continued through the week.

You can put together your own celebrations and start a tradition with your family to let them know that this day should celebrate your freedom, culture and accomplishments. Businesses can celebrate by decorating an area and holding an open conversation about the holiday. This promotes diversity in the workplace. At home, you can put together a family feast and have all the elders in attendance to discuss stories of the past, play games and talk about why the day is important. Incorporating dance, skits or a spoken word are also great ideas for putting together a community event.

Giving life to Juneteenth is the responsibility of us all.

Have your ever heard of Juneteenth? Some People have heard of the celebration of the abolishment of slavery but the issue is, why isn’t it celebrated like the other holidays? We all know the history of slavery in America. It doesn’t matter if they try to remove it from the history books or call slaves indentured servants because it is a part of history that should be told.

What makes Juneteenth unique is that slavery was actually abolished on January 1, 1963. While the rest of the country was celebrating, or not, slaves in the state of Texas spent 2 ½ years more as slaves. There are plenty stories about why they didn’t get the message, but for them to wait that long to find out sounds deliberate. This holiday was established for June 19th. It is widely celebrated in Texas still to this day.
