CHARM SCHOOL’S NOT CLOSED FOR SUMMER

CHARM SCHOOL’S NOT CLOSED FOR SUMMER

Show me a woman who can set a proper formal dinner table, who won’t pick up her cell during dinner and won’t put her elbows on the table, and I’ll show you a woman who’s been taught a little something about etiquette.

There is no doubt that a truly cultured woman should show good manners and conduct herself as a lady at all times, and this usually starts at home. We need to go back to teaching our young ladies how to develop into beautiful women, not bad b@!*ches!

I firmly believe once our young ladies learn proper etiquette at home first, they will be fine out in the world, as being courteous builds self-esteem and character. If they treat their family with courtesy, then all the difficulties they’ll encounter in the world will be easier to bear. Knowing how to speak English properly shows that you are well-versed and educated, and that’s something that people pay attention to.

There are even some schools located in Maryland that even offer to mentor and teach our young ladies proper etiquette. One of my favorites is Afro Puffs and Ponytails, Inc. They offer empowerment seminars, camps, daddy & daughter events as well as etiquette classes and lessons. Every little girl likes to play dress-up and have tea parties, so what could be better than signing them up for this enriching program with lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime?

I remember back when I was in school taking Home Economics (possibly a thing of the past). We were given important lessons in etiquette, but at the time, I didn’t place much value in it, since etiquette didn’t seem necessary among friends your own age. I never realized how important those lessons would be until I became a grown woman and was invited to my first dinner party! I looked at the formal dinner table with its intricate table setting and thought to myself, “What is all this stuff on this table?” The first thing that came to my mind was that lesson from Home Economics, and boy, did I wish I’d paid more attention! But like they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, so I followed the crowd. When they ate their soup they grabbed the soup spoon, and so did I; when they grabbed the salad fork, I watched and did the same. That was truly a mind-boggling job for me that night. I mean, who would have thought that knowing the difference between your water glass and your red or wine glass was so important? Well, I’m here to tell you that while it may seem very daunting, it’s just another one of those things that separates the women from the little girls.

I’m telling you, there will come a time when a lady will get to dress in her fanciest clothes, draped in all her elegant accessories and be on the arm of a very handsome gent heading to a dinner party, and you’ll want to act as if you’ve been in her designer shoes before. But you’ll never get there without a little bit of class.

Oh, and don’t forget your “please” and “thank you’s!”
