- Every winter we’re all faced with some dilemmas, one of the major dilemma’s being our skin. Top expert esthetician Sylvia Brownlee of Pure Beauty Bar gave us five tips to gain beautiful skin even during the winter months.
Check out what she has to say:
1.) What are the biggest challenges of skin care in the winter?
The biggest challenges of skin care in the winter include low water intake, external environment, dry heat caused by dry air, the wind, low humidity, heat, and fireplaces. Due to this one will want to make a conscious effort to lower the heat at night, use cool mist humidifiers to hydrate the skin and scalp, increase water intake, stay away from over-scrubbing and consult an esthetician.
2.) What type of skin regimen do you suggest for women in the winter time for the best skin?
The skin care regimen for the winter will be based on if your skin is normal to dry or combination oily. Someone that is drier will need more moisture than someone that has an oilier skin type. Both skin types need to make sure their water intake is up, and they are using a sulfate-free cleanser, mild exfoliant, and moisturizer. One should have a facial at least four times a year with the change of season, someone that has more concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne, dark circles, etc. can also consult their technician about chemical peels.
3.) What type of skin care regimen do you suggest for someone suffering from dry skin during the winter months?
Someone suffering from dry skin in the winter needs to make sure the elements in their home are not drying them out, for example, hard water, space heaters, long hot showers, all these things can dry your skin out even more. One needs to make sure they are using a sulfate-free cleanser so that the skin doesn’t dry out even more by using aggressive, harsh cleansers.
- Hydrating Cleanser
- Serum to hydrate: this will penetrate deeper into the skin than a moisturizer which will hydrate on the surface. Once to twice a week, you will want to exfoliate the skin with a recommended gentle exfoliator that is finely-grounded or a papaya enzyme crème to remove the dead skin cells, but keep in mind that over exfoliation can cause problems and irritation. Also, apply a masque at least once a week that is specific for dry, dehydrated skin.
- Moisturizer
- Sun Protection of at least SPF 20
4.) What are the best treatments to seek at a spa and how often should you go?
The best treatments to find at a spa during the winter months are hydrating facials and chemical peels. Depending on your skin concerns, one could go to the spa during the winter months for chemical peels as often as every two weeks to every six weeks for maintenance.
5.) What should you look for when choosing a spa?
When selecting a spa look at the reviews online, ask for recommendations from friends who have great skin and go in for a consultation to make sure the spa is clean. The esthetician doesn’t do the same service for all her clients and make sure she goes over a thorough consultation with you.
